Oregon baseball bounces back with efficient 16-6 victory against Grand Canyon

The Oregon Ducks (15-3) were feeling rejuvenated up 10-0 against the Grand Canyon Antelopes (12-5) at the bottom of the fourth inning. Ten runs is typically more than enough to secure a victory, but the Ducks weren’t done.

A scary sight for pitchers across the country was up to bat for Oregon: junior designated hitter Dominic Hellman.

Hellman fell behind in the count 1-2. On the next pitch, his eyes lit up as an off-speed pitch appeared to be spinning right into the sweet spot. The pitch hung over the plate, and Hellman slaughtered the two-run bomb into the back of the Antelopes bullpen in left field.

Hellman had the highlight of the 16-6 victory, but the offense was led by senior right fielder Jeffrey Heard, who was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. The veterans on the team popped out in this game as Hellman, Jacob Walsh and Heard each had three hits.

“It instills confidence in everyone else,” Heard said. “We’re older guys, we’ve been through the ups and…

McConaghie: Big Ten Reality Check -- B1G mistakes cost the Ducks in conference opener to No. 20 Buckeyes

Oregon women’s lacrosse (5-3, 0-1 Big Ten) suffered its first home loss of the season in its Big Ten conference debut, falling to the No. 20 Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0, 1-0 Big Ten). The Buckeyes overwhelmed the Ducks, outscoring them by a three-to-one margin to dominate 20-6.

Oregon entered the matchup ranked in the NCAA’s top-10 for both draw control percentage and draw controls per game, but the matchup unfolded with a different story.

“They were just a little bit cleaner than us. They had less mistakes and I think that’s a team that’s gonna capitalize on any kind of mistakes,” head coach Jessica Drummond said. “Losing that ball and turnovers on our end of being able to give them second chance opportunities on offense to put that ball away, is what we want to make sure we limit in the future.”

The Buckeyes’ NCAA top three scoring defense was suffocating for Oregon, only allowing 14 shots on goal compared to the Buckeyes’ 30.

The Ducks struggled with…

Oregon women’s lacrosse faces an unfortunate 20-6 loss against No. 20 Ohio State

Rain and cloudy skies seemed to be an ominous warning for women’s Oregon lacrosse (5-3, 0-1 Big Ten)Wednesday against No. 20 Ohio State (7-0, 1-0 Big Ten). The grey and cold atmosphere set the mood for the entire game, much to the Ducks’ misfortune in a 20-6 defeat.

Wednesday’s was the Ducks’ first game within the Big Ten conference, something that they had high hopes for.

It was a tough start for Oregon in the first quarter. Ohio State managed to get on the scoreboard first only a minute-and-a-half into the game with a goal from Buckeye midfielder Kampbell Stone. Nearly three minutes after Stone’s goal, Ohio State scored yet again making it a 0-2 Ducks’ deficit early on in the game.

After a foul made by Ohio State, the Ducks were given their first opportunity to shorten the Buckeyes’ lead. Attacker Gabby Santucci had been the one to get Oregon’s first goal of the game, her first of many of the night, only trailing by one.

McConaghie: Oregon falls to GCU -- a setback or a wake-up call?

The No. 9 Oregon baseball team (14-3) saw its eleven-game win streak come to an end Tuesday night, falling to Grand Canyon University (12-4) in a tightly contested 4-2 loss.

After sweeping the USC Trojans on the road, Oregon returned to PK Park for a two-game midweek series against the unranked GCU.

However, the Ducks could not keep their momentum going and fell short of setting a program record for consecutive wins.

“We didn’t get the hit with two outs,” Oregon head coach Mark Wasikowski said. “We’ve been through the stretch that we’ve been winning here, and we didn’t get that hit today.”

Mason Neville launched the first pitch deep to left-center, giving Oregon an early lead.

Oregon starter Ian Umlandt dominated through six scoreless innings, but the tide turned in the seventh. Carson Ohland swung on the first pitch across the plate and took it deep to left field, sending the ball over the wall.

“He usually doesn’t beat himself,”…

Duck’s offense falters in 4-2 loss against Grand Canyon

At the bottom of the seventh of the No. 9 ranked Oregon Ducks’ (14-2) Tuesday battle against the Grand Canyon Antelopes (12-4), Oregon found itself in trouble of losing its 11-game win streak as it was down 4-1 late.

This potent Ducks offense wasn’t going down without a fight, though. Junior third baseman Carter Garate walked on four pitches to lead-off the inning, then was able to move up to second due to a balk. Junior center fielder Mason Neville then stepped up to bat and ripped a single to right field. That single would’ve put runners on the corners with nobody out for Oregon, but players and fans instead clenched their teeth as Garate made the big turn home to try and cut the lead to two in that instant.

In a play that sucked the life out of PK Park, Garate was hosed at home after a perfect throw from the Grand Canyon right fielder, and the score remained 4-1.

“That was probably a mistake, and everybody knew that. Even coach Hinkle probably even knew that,”…

Oregon dominates Game 2 with a 3-1 win over Abilene Christian

The No. 12 Oregon Ducks (23-2) closed out day three of the Jane Sanders Classic against the Abilene Christian Wildcats (4-20), taking care of business 3-1 for their second win of the day.

“This is a special group,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said. “They’ve got a plan, and they’ve got a journey, and they’re working hard to execute.”

Oregon starting pitcher Lyndsey Grein (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) began the game with a quick top of the first inning. Taylor Bachmeyer hit a fly ball into the mitt of center fielder Kedre Luschar for the first out of the game before Grein recorded her first strikeout looking and forced a grounder, making it a quick three and out.

Against Abilene Christian starting pitcher Lina Russo (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 3 BB), Oregon went down one-two-three in the bottom of the first.

Grein continued her dominance in the top of the second inning with three quick outs.

“We’re so dialed into what we’re doing, we’re not paying attention to…

No. 12 Oregon knocks off No. 8 Florida State for the second time this weekend 1-0

After the No. 12 Oregon Ducks (22-2) upset the No. 8 Florida State Seminoles (20-5) on Friday night 2-0, the Seminoles looked to rebound against the Ducks in a mid-afternoon Sunday game, part of the 2025 Jane Sanders Classic. However, the Ducks stayed strong and knocked off the No. 8 team in the nation again in their second meeting, 1-0.

Oregon starting pitcher Elise Sokolsky (7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) started off strong in the top of the first inning with a quick three and out as Florida State’s first three batters had no luck.

Against Florida State’s starting pitcher Ashtyn Danley (4 ⅓ IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB), Oregon started off the bottom of the first inning with a Kai Luschar ground ball, reaching first after an official review. Even with Luschar stealing second, Katie Flannery hit a pop fly to right field, ending the inning with a runner left in scoring position for the Ducks.

The Seminoles started the top of the second inning with Michaela Edenfield…

Oregon State spoils the party at the Jane Sanders Classic in a 5-2 win over No. 12 Oregon

After a close 2-0 win over No. 8 Florida State on Friday night, No. 12 Oregon softball (21-2) fell to in-state rival Oregon State (10-12) in its second of five showings at the 2025 Jane Sanders Classic.

All good things must come to an end.

Oregon softball’s 16-game winning streak was no exception to that rule, and the Oregon State Beavers took their shot in a 5-2 win.

Beaver starting pitcher Logan Hulon (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB) came out hot with three strikeouts in the first inning. Even with Oregon’s notorious base stealer Kai Luschar advancing to third on two stolen bags, Hulon settled down and struck out the side.

Sophomore pitcher Taylour Spencer made her sixth start of the year in the circle for the Ducks. At the top of the second, she let up her third long ball of the year when OSU designated player Tristian Thompson took the first pitch she saw deep into left field for a two-run homer — 2-0 Beavs.

The Ducks had a couple of great looks with…

McConaghie: The curse of a bye week -- the challenge of returning to the mats

After the No. 4 Oregon Ducks (2-1) fell to the No. 1 Baylor Bears, the team took a week off from the competition, and faced a series of challenges and lessons learned as they returned to the mat against Gannon University (2-4).

“We have a little bit of more fun in the bye weeks, and so it's not that the focus isn’t there, it's just a little bit of like we can breathe,” head coach Taylor Susnara said. “So sometimes that can create a little bit of lax, even though they are not meaning to. I think we just had a few things go wrong today.”

Pressure intensified as a series of bobbles and falls led the Ducks to recording three season low scores in the first half of the meet.

“We can’t change what happened in the first half but at the end of the day we say leave it there and go 0-0 heading into the next heat,” Susnara said. ”It is what it is.”

Freshman Morgan Willingham fell to the pressure of the moment. In the compulsory tumbling event, she got confused…
