McConaghie: The curse of a bye week -- the challenge of returning to the mats

After the No. 4 Oregon Ducks (2-1) fell to the No. 1 Baylor Bears, the team took a week off from the competition, and faced a series of challenges and lessons learned as they returned to the mat against Gannon University (2-4).

“We have a little bit of more fun in the bye weeks, and so it's not that the focus isn’t there, it's just a little bit of like we can breathe,” head coach Taylor Susnara said. “So sometimes that can create a little bit of lax, even though they are not meaning to. I think we just had a few things go wrong today.”

Pressure intensified as a series of bobbles and falls led the Ducks to recording three season low scores in the first half of the meet.

“We can’t change what happened in the first half but at the end of the day we say leave it there and go 0-0 heading into the next heat,” Susnara said. ”It is what it is.”

Freshman Morgan Willingham fell to the pressure of the moment. In the compulsory tumbling event, she got confused…

Lyndsey Grein, Braiesey Rosa power 2-0 victory over Seminoles

No. 12 Oregon softball (21-1) never fully got the bats going in Friday’s ranked showdown with No. 8 Florida State (19-4) to open its Jane Sanders Classic slate. But with Lyndsey Grein the circle, the Ducks didn’t need much offense, as she shut out the Seminoles by herself in a 2-0 win.

Grein, a coveted junior transfer from Virginia Tech, held a formidable Seminoles lineup, which came in with 34 home runs this season, to a single hit — a Kennedy Harp single in the first inning.

Grein would go on to throw 100 pitches and walk only one batter, finishing with five strikeouts. She continues an otherworldly start to her Ducks career with a perfect 12-0 record and a 0.72 ERA. Until March 1 against San Diego, a complete game shutout was just about the only thing she hadn’t done this season. All of a sudden, she has two in a row.

Factor in the difficulty of this matchup, and there’s a case for calling this the best game of Grein’s Ducks career to date, but Grein is…

Oregon acrobatics and tumbling wins an up and down night

It was a case of the wobbles at Matthew Knight Arena as the Oregon Ducks (2-1) acrobatics and tumbling team continued their home stand against the Gannon University Golden Knights (2-4). Coming off a tough loss against the No. 1 team in the country, Baylor, the Ducks pulled off a win, despite posting season lows in the first three events.

Acrobatics and tumbling meets are composed of six events, each with a varying number of heats. Every heat has a maximum value of 10 points, except for the team routine event, which has a maximum value of 110 points. The maximum number of points a team could score in a meet is 300.

The meet started off with the compulsory event, where each team showcases an identical predetermined set of skills across four heats — acro, pyramid, toss and tumbling.

In the tumbling heat, Oregon’s Morgan Willingham omitted a flip and instead just walked backwards, while the other athletes completed their flip. After walking off the mat, head coach…

Oregon continues to roll in 15-0 victory against Utah Tech

At the bottom of the first during the Tuesday battle between the Oregon Ducks (11-2) and the Utah Tech Trailblazers (5-9), junior center fielder Mason Neville was at the plate and in his usual leadoff spot for the Ducks offense.

He was in a grinder first at-bat as he was put in a full count after fouling one off. On the sixth pitch, Neville showed off his strength by blistering a pitch in the upper part of the zone and sending it deep the opposite way to left center field and over the wall.

“3-2 count, I just tried to put a good at-bat together and put a good swing on it,” Neville said. “I like to set the tone for the rest of the lineup.”

This was Neville’s seventh home run of the season and it gave Oregon a lead it would never look back on in the 15-0 victory.

The Ducks were coming off a series sweep of the Columbia Lions the weekend before. In that series, Oregon scored a combined 70 runs, including a program record 35-run outburst in Game 2.

Oregon men's basketball surges to a 73-64 win over Indiana

Oregon (22-8, 11-8 Big Ten)and Indiana (18-12, 9-10 Big Ten) played an exciting, back-and-forth game in the home stretch of the regular season, and the Ducks came out on top 73-64 thanks to some late game heroics. After a mid-season slump that contained five straight losses, the Ducks have now won six straight heading into their regular season finale.

Tuesday night’s game was well-matched throughout, as neither team could pull away. Oregon controlled the majority of the first half, slowly building its lead out to nine points around the six-minute mark. Indiana eventually caught fire and went on a 13-2 run, which gave the Hoosiers a 32-30 lead with 1:50 remaining. The Ducks held Indiana scoreless to end the half, and they went into the locker room up 35-32.

The second half was much of the same story. Despite their strong home court advantage, Oregon was unable to pull away. Indiana tied the game at 47-all with around 13 minutes remaining, and from there the Ducks and…

Flores: Dominic Hellman’s having a breakout season in the making

Dominic Hellman stood off to the left side of the dugout watching opposing pitcher Dax Newman finish off his teammate Mason Neville, caught staring in the zone.

Hellman walked the few short feet to the right-handed batter's box, setting himself, left foot on the backline with the right slightly open. He watched as the first pitch sailed across the plate, called strike one. He exited the box, took a short breath, then stepped back. One pitch was all he needed to see. The second pitch never came across the plate. Instead, it flew out of PK Park. Hellman, the sensation is not over yet but just beginning.

In the 2025 season, the Ducks’ bats have broken out of their shells to start the year. In 13 games the Ducks have scored 158 runs, and there is one Duck whose season and production are rising rapidly. It’s Hellman’s junior season for the Ducks and he’s making this season one to remember. Hellman has been a fiery standout for Oregon through the first three series at…

Oregon baseball gets first sweep of season in 7-0 victory against Columbia

The Oregon Ducks (10-2) were geared up for a series sweep in Sunday’s finale against the Columbia Lions (1-6). Oregon was up 7-0 in the bottom of the ninth and had only allowed two hits up to that point. With two outs, the Lions were looking for a desperation comeback attempt as they got two runners on first and second.

Right-handed closer Seth Mattox was on the hill for the Ducks. He got ahead early in the count 1-2 against Lions pinch hitter Tate Vogler. On the next pitch, he set, fired and delivered a nasty breaking ball. Vogler whiffed, and that capped off an excellent Oregon pitching performance with a win and the first sweep of the season.

The strong Mattox close was preceded by other solid pitching performances. Freshman starter Will Sanford shoved in his third start of the year, going six innings with one hit, zero runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Ducks came off a historic doubleheader sweep the day before. In Game 1 of the day, Oregon put up a…

Ducks close out Oregon Classic with 9-1 win over Loyola Chicago

No. 14 Oregon softball (20-1) steamrolled Loyola Chicago (3-15) in the series finale of the Oregon Classic and opening weekend at Jane Sanders Stadium. The Ducks were down 1-0 until the fourth inning, when they finally caught fire and started putting numbers on the board.

The Ducks stepped onto the field looking to continue their undefeated streak at home and add to their nearly flawless record, with their only loss coming against Arizona State over two weeks ago in the Littlewood Classic.

Scoring was scarce up until mid-game when Oregon decided to flip the switch. Sophomore Taylour Spencer pitched all five innings, only giving up one hit, a solo homer in the second. Spencer also boosted her season strikeout total with three punchouts, bringing her to 24 strikeouts across 24 ⅓ innings this season.

‘“I was frustrated, but after that pitch I said, ‘Next time she comes up to bat, I'm gonna strike her out,’” Spencer said. “And I did.” …
