Valleau: With TJ Bamba on the perimeter and Nate Bittle down low, the Ducks have made the entire court feel like a prison

The No. 17 Purdue Boilermakers have made a name for themselves in the college basketball land due to their dominating paint presence. Players like Zach Edey dominated the skies for four years, and now with Edey in the NBA, Purdue has looked elsewhere to continue the trend.

They were looking to find that player in a showdown against the No. 13 Oregon Ducks on Saturday at Matthew Knight Arena. That search will have to continue though, as the Oregon Ducks’ skyscraper Nate Bittle took over the paint against the Boilermakers.

The shining moment from Bittle came at the 11-minute mark in the first half, when Purdue forward Camden Heide challenged Bittle at the rim, only to be turned away by a ferocious block from behind for the big man. To follow it up on the other end, Bittle splashed home a 3-pointer after a nice dish from Jadrian Tracey.

“Nate cleaned up a lot in there, he did a tremendous job,” said Oregon head…

Students and fans pack out Matthew Knight Arena for ranked Big Ten showdown

Coming off the successful yet stressful road trip to Columbus and University Park, the No. 13 Oregon Ducks turn their focus to the No. 17 Purdue Boilermakers. It was the first ranked matchup for Purdue since its 18-point loss to the now-ranked No. 1 Auburn Tigers.

While the Ducks managed to win their prior three quad-one games, hosting Maryland and defeating Ohio State and Penn State on the road, the team’s last ranked matchup facing now-No. 19 Illinois delivered an unfavorable outcome.

Purdue and All-Conference guard Braden Smith looked to push the tempo early and create confusion among the Ducks’ defenders. The Boilermakers forced the ball down low to Trey Kaufman-Renn who couldn’t get one to fall. He started the game 0-for-6 from the floor then took a hard fall from the flagrant foul against Nate Bittle, all in the first five minutes of play.

Oregon’s defense emphasized protecting the paint and taking advantage of its…

Setrakian: Mimi Colyer and Michelle Ohwobete’s Symbiotic Domination is Too Sweet for the Ducks

After an all-around shaky first set for the Oregon Ducks in which Michelle Ohwobete shined bright, no moment was brighter than her emphatic kill and block on back-to-back plays to score the Ducks’ 24th and second-set-clinching 25th point -- sending the Duck faithful into a frenzy that Ohwobete matched with a scream of her own.

The senior outside hitter’s intensity undoubtedly anchored the Ducks’ energy the rest of the way, ensuring that this would not be the final game of her career.

“Michelle is very stable, and she’s really good at communicating,” middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu said about Ohwobete’s second set. “She’s really good about being intentional with her play, and that energy for us always makes us feel more stable. It feels like she’s a foundational player on our team. It’s awesome.”

Beyond her energetic impact, Ohwobete lit up the score sheet, notching her third double-double in the last four games, and ninth…

Oregon volleyball advances to the Sweet 16

The Oregon Ducks took on the TCU Horned Frogs in Eugene, Ore. with a chance at the Sweet 16 on the line. The Ducks came into this playoff matchup against TCU knowing this would be a tough task.

While the Ducks were ranked higher at No. 14, TCU was ranked at No. 20. This was daunting for the Ducks, as they struggled against ranked opponents this season, sitting at a 4-6 record. These fears were apparent after the first set, as the Ducks were handled 25-19.

They looked more of the same in the second set until a fire was lit underneath the entire Oregon squad. A 9-3 scoring run, started by an electric kill from Colby Neal, fueled the Ducks out to a 19-16 lead. After some back and forth, a 4-0 Ducks scoring run iced the set at 25-21. This energetic second half of Set 2 gave the Ducks the momentum that they needed for blowout Sets 3 and 4 which gave Oregon the victory.

Oregon was coming off of a first-round sweep of…
