Bluth: Oregon's lackluster bullpen has stunted the team's potential
For the No. 16-ranked Oregon Ducks (26-10, 13-6 Big Ten), their biggest weekend series is upon them, defining if they truly are a contender this season. As the 2025 roster inches closer to breaking historic school records, they looked to keep momentum going after the biggest win of the season on Friday against conference-leading, No. 10-ranked UCLA Bruins (28-9, 12-4 Big Ten).
The Ducks’ weekend showcase proves whether they are the real deal going forward. Oregon’s offensive stars continue to shine in its biggest moments, as it looks to lead an end-of-the-season push. They’re peaking at the perfect time.
With a memorable Friday opening showdown in Eugene, Ore., the Ducks were led by junior pitcher Grayson Grinsell. He followed his first career complete game, with seven strikeouts, raising his career total to 229 and passing Tommy Thorpe (2012-14) to become fourth all-time at Oregon.
“It means everything,” Grinsell said in a postgame interview.

After a Saturday showdown at The Jane, both the Ducks and the Bruins remain tied in their pursuit of both a series victory and the top spot in the Big Ten conference.
The No. 5 Oregon Ducks (40-5, 13-2 Big Ten) softball team went down scoreless against the No. 6 UCLA Bruins (41-6, 13-2 Big Ten) in the second game of the series by a final of 8-0.
Oregon started off strong, coming through with a perfect first inning led by junior pitcher Lyndsey Grein, as she struck out two. Grein was a clutch contributor in the Friday night victory for the first game of the series against the Bruins.
However, the scoreboard stayed empty up until the top of the third, when junior third baseman Jordan Woolery decided to put UCLA on the board first with a sacrifice fly to right. Graduate outfielder Jessica Clements continued the momentum, scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning.
“It took us too long to try and make an adjustment at the plate, we got…

At the bottom of the first of the middle match between the No. 16 Oregon Ducks (26-11, 13-7 Big Ten) and the No. 10 UCLA Bruins (29-9, 13-4 Big Ten), lead-off junior center fielder Mason Neville was up to bat and looking to fill in the early 1-0 hole the Ducks had put themselves in. He went down in the count 1-2 early in the at-bat, but worked two straight pitches to fill it up. On the next pitch, Neville activated the launch sequence and cracked the ball deep to right field. The ball soared over the Oregon bullpen and the Sargent Player Development Area during the monstrous homer. Neville knew it immediately as he flipped his bat and looked toward his fired-up dugout.
The bullpen would let down these efforts, though, as UCLA rallied and took Game 2 with a 14-4 score.
Senior first baseman Jacob Walsh led the way for the Oregon offense today, going 2-for-4 with two homers and two RBIs.

For No. 6 Oregon Softball (40-4, 13-1 Big Ten), this season has been a roller coaster of intense emotions in the pitching circle.
Virginia Tech transfer junior pitcher Lyndsey Grein has emerged as a standout this season, especially after leading her team to a stunning 3-1 upset over No. 5 UCLA (40-6, 12-2 Big Ten). It snapped the Bruins’ 12-game win streak and helped Oregon tie for the most wins in Division I softball this season.
As of Friday, Grein ranks No. 5 among NCAA DI pitchers this season. She’s also in the top 10 for lowest ERA and leads the nation in fewest hits allowed per seven innings, with just 60 given up.
“I thought she did a great job of not trying to do too much and trusting her plan,” Oregon head coach Melyssa Lombardi said.
Grein held Megan Grant, the DI leader in home runs, hitless in two at-bats, striking her out and intentionally walking her.
“Grant is an excellent hitter,” Lombardi said. “She’s probably one of…

An all-time performance was at stake during the No. 16-ranked Oregon Ducks’ (26-10, 13-6 Big Ten) showdown series opener against the No. 10 UCLA Bruins (28-9, 12-4 Big Ten). Left-handed starting pitcher Grayson Grinsell was through 7 ⅔ innings and was hungry for the eighth. He got ahead in the count 0-2, then dished an off-speed pitch that dropped from the sky and had the batter flailing. It was strikeout number six for Grinsell, and the PK Park crowd was roaring as their ace was three outs away from a two-hit complete game.
Junior designated hitter Dominic Hellman led the way for the Oregon offense, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBIs.
“I got a good support system behind me,” Hellman said. “Trusting my work, sticking with my process, and the boys picking me up, I like to give my personal accolades to my team. Kind of shows how we all get after it at practice.”

Lyndsey Grein and Elise Sokolsky had Jane Sanders Stadium on their feet and loud with every strikeout thrown on Friday night. But, it was Rylee McCoy who got the Lion’s Den roaring in the fourth inning.
The No. 5 Oregon Ducks (40-4, 13-1 Big Ten) kicked off the weekend series against the No. 6 UCLA Bruins (40-6, 12-2 Big 10), taking Game 1, 3-1.
Oregon starting pitcher Lyndsey Grein (5 1/3 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) started off the ballgame with a strikeout. However, the top of the first was the Kedre Luschar show, hauling in two fly balls to make quick work of the inning.
UCLA starting pitcher Taylor Tinsley (6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) shut the Ducks down with three quick outs in the bottom of the first inning.
The top of the second inning saw Grein add three strikeouts while allowing a single, but was able to escape the inning without allowing the runner to advance beyond first.
The Bruins continued their dominant defense, going three up and three…

Wehrly: After previous success against Michigan in their three-game weekend, the Ducks succumb to the Wolverine's claws in Game 3
Entering Sunday, Ducks baseball was optimistic going into Game 3 against Michigan. No. 15 Oregon (22-9, 10-5 Big Ten) won its prior two games this weekend against the Wolverines. They had high hopes of achieving another successful game.
Game 3 started off on a good foot, with Mason Neville slamming a home run for the Ducks in the first inning, putting Oregon in the lead. It was a back-and-forth fight after that.
The second inning had both teams with no runs, each player at bat determined to drive the ball deep into the outfield in hopes of securing a run, or even better, a home run.
But at the top of the third, the Wolverines managed to tie the score with a drive from Colby Turner, with Keegan O’Hearn securing the run from third base. Immediately after that, the same player took a chance to advance to home plate after Cole Caruso hit the ball deep into the outfield and Turner scored another run for Michigan.
However, Oregon answered…
