EUGENE, Ore. – Teitum Tuioti is one of four senior starting defensive linemen returning to this Oregon Defense. The team is often touted as one of the best defensive lines and best defenses in the nation. He led the Ducks a year ago with 68 tackles, 16 of those for loss, and 9.5 sacks, leading the team in both categories.
His younger brother Mana is a sophomore linebacker on this feisty Bronco defense and has the potential to earn a spot and be an integral part of the Boise State front seven throughout the season. In 2025, he notched six total tackles in 14 games played, mostly playing on special teams. He also made two fumble recoveries against Appalachian State and Nevada, respectively, while also earning himself Mountain West All-Academic honors.
Their dad, Tony, is Oregon’s defensive line coach, and there’s no doubt that the coaching side of the family began as soon as his boys were born. It only intensified when they got to Sheldon High School in Eugene. Hometown kids coming back to play one another in this season opener, it really does feel like the script to a Hollywood movie.
At Sheldon, the brothers combined for 305 tackles in their pre-college careers. While also putting up 30 sacks. Manu was more of the offensive threat on the other side of the ball as he rushed for a total of 751 and had 16 receptions for 206 yards in his senior season.
There is no doubt that this game was absolutely massive for both players and both teams, with Boise State leading the series 3-1 coming in. Bronco fans will believe the score of that series should’ve been 4-0 after Oregon scraped out a nail-biter with heroic special teams. This gave them the win in their second game of the season just a couple of years ago.
It was a bit of deja vu this time around, a great special teams display and a defensive front performance held the duo of Sire Gaines and Dylan Riley to under 100 yards rushing. Tatum and the Ducks were able to pull off the victory 34-27 in another barn burner between these two teams. Tuioti finished with 6 total tackles, with 2 being for loss. This cuts the Broncos’ all-time series lead to 3-2.
Tuioti’s partner in crime Matayo Uiagalelei spoke about the work from the defensive line over the offseason.
“But you know, knowing when to try and win with speed and win with power, and understanding that you know the best rushers can win on the edge. They're going through somebody, and they can have a good counter,” Uiagalelei said.
The brotherhood and emphasis on family associated with the Polynesian culture are evident and crucial with both of these edge rushers, and Tuioti was able to give some insight on what it means to him.
“You know, at the end of the day, we want to make our families proud. And that’s what we did today,” Tuioti said.
Manu was able to log some minutes on special teams, being Dylan Riley’s lead blocker on kickoff and even fielding one himself.
It was great to see both brothers out there, and there’s no doubt that their father Tony will be proud of them. Number 55 and 44 in the blue and orange and green and yellow have made it to the D1 level on some of the most well-known teams in the country. They can only hope that their next meeting on the football field is in the National Football League.
