OREGON MBB: The Path to March Madness

By Yaniv Horenstein

Coach Dana Altman is getting his team ready for Pac-12 play, and some key players with upcoming returns may change the course of Oregon’s season. At 8-3, the Ducks need a strong second half of the season to put themselves in a position for a March Madness tournament selection. After a 20-point loss to unranked Syracuse last week, fans may be doubting the Ducks chances. However, the long-awaited return of N’Faly Dante and Mookie Cook could give Oregon the contributors it needs to beat good teams.

Oregon has faced injuries all year. During the Ducks' first game against Georgia in early November, Dante suffered a hamstring injury and has been sidelined for roughly two months. Shortly after, Nate Bittle injured his wrist against Tennessee State and could be out for the season. Transfer guard Jesse Zarzuela, from Central Michigan, has an ankle injury and is out for the season. Veteran guard, Keeshawn Barthelemy, has been out the last two…

NBA POWER RANKINGS

Written by Yaniv Horenstein, Tal Cohen, and Leo Schulhof

1. Minnesota Timberwolves (17-4)

While there were some projections before the season started about the Timberwolves being in the upper echelon of Western Conference teams, there weren’t many who predicted them to have the best record in the league up to this point. Anthony Edwards has been a star with averages of 26 points, six rebounds, and five assists per game. The supporting cast isn’t lacking star power either, with Karl Anthony Towns averaging 22 points on 51% shooting, accompanied by 9 boards, and a block and a steal apiece. Rudy Gobert has been a significant contributor on the defensive end, averaging 12 rebounds (fifth in the league) and 2.4 blocks (third in the league), though Gobert has been a defensive force in the league for years now, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. …

MBB Story: Oregon Takes Down UTEP At Home

By Jonah Bruneau

Eugene, ORE – In a game that was closely contested throughout the entire first half, the Oregon Ducks dominated the second half of action, outscoring the UTEP Miners 43-24. In another game without senior N’Faly Dante and junior Nate Bittle in the lineup, the Ducks still managed to take over the complexity of the game and were able to record a 71-49 victory over the Miners, kick-starting a three-game homestand for Oregon.

Oregon got off to a slow start in the first half, turning the ball over 12 times and going 0-6 from downtown. Senior Keeshawn Barthelemy was the leading Duck scorer in the opening 20 minutes, logging eight points while going 3-3 from the field and 2-4 from the free-throw line. Freshman Jackson Shelstad earned a starting five spot for the second consecutive game after his 14 point performance one week ago against Michigan, which included him knocking down the game-winning three in overtime. In 16 minutes of playing time, Shelstad…
