Baseball Story: Cal Dominates Oregon in Game One of Weekend Series

By Jonah Bruneau

EUGENE, Ore. – The Golden Bears of Cal got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as they took down the Ducks 13-1 on Friday night to open the weekend series.

Oregon, coming into Friday at 11-5, had dropped the mid-week match back on Tuesday against Portland in an eye-opening 15-5 loss. The pitching woes largely continued inside PK Park on Friday.

Junior RJ Gordon got the start on the mound for the Ducks in what would become his worst outing so far on the season. Gordon went five innings giving up six earned runs on seven hits, three of which were round trippers. The Junior catcher for the Golden Bears, Caleb Lomavita, took Gordon deep twice, with the first being a two-run shot in the opening inning, and the other being a solo shot in the top of the fifth en route to a 3-5 day at the plate.

Two Freshman for California, PJ Moutzouridis and Matthew Thomas, each went deep as well.

Oregon’s only run was courtesy of Freshman Ryan Cooney’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 5-1 in favor of Cal at that point. From there, the Golden Bears scored eight unanswered runs on their way to victory.

Game two of the series will be played tomorrow afternoon beginning at 2:05 PM inside PK Park as the Ducks look to bounce back.
