Oregon Track and Field Sweeps Pepsi Invitational in Home Opener
The Oregon Ducks Track and Field team opened up at Hayward Field on Saturday for the Pepsi Team Invitational against the Washington Huskies, Washington State Cougars, and BYU Cougars. Oregon walked away with titles on both sides and had impressive performances all across the board. The Women's team won the meet in dominant fashion and came out strong from the beginning. Kiana Phelps won the first event of the day in the Women's Discus, while Madddie Rabing won the women's hammer. Those two later went 2-3 in the women's shot put as well. To start the running events, Oregon's 4x100 relay teams went 1-2 in which was just the start of the dominant day of sprints for Oregon. The Women would go on to go 1-2 in the 100 meter, 1-2 in the long jump, and a dominating 1-5 finish in the 200 meter. The women of Oregon ultimately won the meet by 33 points. Oregon Baseball Sweeps the Doubleheader Against Washington State Behind Dominant Pitching
Behind superb pitching from starters, Matt Mercer and Kenyon Yovan, the Oregon Ducks were able to win both games of the doubleheader against the Washington State Cougars, and secure their second series victory of the Pac 12 season. In the first game, Oregon failed to record a hit past the 3rd inning but was able to hang on to win 2-1. In the second game, Daniel Patzlaff cranked his first homer of the season and gave Oregon critical insurance runs en route to a 4-2 win. Mercer, in game one, totaled 6 IP, giving up only 1 run on 2 hits, while in game 2, Yovan remained undefeated in starts this season, throwing 7 IP, surrendering only 1 run, and striking out 8. Ryne Nelson closed out both games for the Ducks and earned his 3rd and 4th saves of the season. Despite the pitching dominance, the offense failed to score runs after the 3rd inning in both contests. The Ducks had recorded only one hit through five innings and that one hit was a solo shot to right-center field off the bat of Gwen Svekis in the bottom of the second inning. In the top of the sixth inning, the Wildcats tied the score at 1-1 on a chopper to DJ Sanders at shortstop who could not get the ball to home in time to record the out. The Ducks were to quick respond in the bottom half of the inning as Gwen Svekis hit a three blast for her second home run of the night and her 11th of the season. Shannon Rhodes followed it up with a solo shot of her own in the following at-bat. The Ducks improve to 30-6 on the season and 5-3 in Pac 12 play. They will look to win the series tomorrow as Miranda Elish takes the circle at noon tomorrow in game two of their three game series.
