MBB | Oregon Men's Basketball Relies on Defense to Stifle UCLA

The Oregon Ducks defeated the UCLA Bruins by a score of 96-75 at Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Ducks played exceptionally well on defense, and used full court pressure to force 23 Bruin turnovers. The Ducks in total compiled 15 steals, with Chris Duarte recording 6 to lead the way defensively. Duarte was also effective on the offensive side of the ball, racking up 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Ducks other standout performers included Payton Pritchard and Will Richardson, who scored 19 and 16 points respectively. Pritchard, Richardson, and Duarte’s standout performances helped lead the Ducks to their biggest win over UCLA since 1936.

Oregon was able to get out to a huge 48-26 lead at the half, with the Bruins never really being competitive past the opening four minutes of the game. Oregon was able to set the tone early on defense, and was effectively able to stifle the UCLA offense for large…

On Sunday afternoon, Oregon defeated Oregon State 66-57 in a hard-fought game at Gill Coliseum. Oregon jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead before Oregon State fought back to contest the Ducks throughout the first half. At the break, Oregon State led Oregon 37-34. Oregon made glaring adjustments during intermission, as the Ducks held the Beavers to just 8 points on 20% shooting in the third quarter. This dominant display of defense continued in the fourth quarter, as the Ducks allowed just 12 points, giving up just 20 points in the second half. Offensively, Oregon dominated this game inside in the second half. Satou Sabally (16 points, 9 rebounds), Sabrina Ionescu (19 points, 8 rebounds), and Ruthy Hebard (13 points, 14 rebounds) came up big for Oregon in the second half in multiple facets. The Civil War Series began on a high note for the women in white and green. The Ducks opened their 2 game series with longtime rival Oregon State with a convincing 12 point win. Oregon State opened the game on a 10-2 thanks to hot shooting and stout defense. The Ducks struggled on both ends for the first 5 minutes, but Sabrina Ionescu was there yet again to kick the Ducks into gear. The Oregon superstar is likely to be among the finalists for the Naismith Award come march and senior only made her case stronger tonight.
