BSB: Oregon completes four-game sweep of Xavier to open the season

By: Ian Sutliff

Eugene, OR-- The Ducks went into Sunday 3-0 after a Saturday where it beat Xavier twice and totaled fourteen runs. Sunday’s series finale was a different story though as Nick Boyle cruised through the first four frames as he kept Oregon off the board while striking out three and allowing just one hit. Going into the fifth inning, freshman Jakson Pace had retired 14 of the last 16 batters he’d faced after giving up a one out double to Andrew Walker in the first. After allowing a walk to Teddy Deters, Carter Hendrickson hit a line drive double down the left field which was misplayed for a second by Tanner Smith, allowing Deters to score from first.

The Musketeers would hold the 1-0 lead into the seventh inning where the Ducks’ only hit to that point was an infield single from Gavin Grant in the third inning. After holding Xavier to no runs in the top of the seventh after they loaded the bases, Josiah Cromwick took the first pitch he saw…

BSB | Ducks Offense Awakens for Doubleheader Sweep

By Kent Williams

On a cloudy February afternoon, the Oregon Ducks(3-0) took on the Xavier Musketeers(0-3) for games 2 and 3 of their series and came away victorious in both of them. While neither was in walk-off fashion like Friday's exciting game, it was a turn around for an offense that struggled to get going.

Game 1

The offense got off to a hot start in this game, scoring in each of the first four innings. Catcher Josiah Cromwick got things off to a great start with a 3-run homer for his first of the season and gave the Ducks a quick lead. However, DH Sabin Ceballos would respond with a long shot of his own in the second inning, this one a solo shot to widen the gap. Oregon would tack on a couple more crooked numbers in the 3rd and 4th inning, including Cromwick's second home run of the day.

While Cromwick had a great day at that plate, all eyes were on freshman starting pitcher Leo Uelmen making his…

Oregon Looks for Second Consecutive Win in Women’s Lacrosse

By Charles Martindale The Ducks lacrosse season began last weekend, and the team’s opening game was a pleasant contrast to how they played for much of the 2022 season. After going 4-14 last year, the Ducks took advantage of playing Xavier in their program debut, cruising to a 17-6 win. Oregon heads into Saturday’s game with something a little newer: momentum, as they continue to get a picture of what their 2023 team is made of following a win to start the season. They’ll have their work cut out for them however, playing host to a Niagara college team on a 2-0 start to their year, outscoring opponents 31-9 so far. The Purple Eagles went 9-9 in 2022, and 8-5 the year prior, so they definitely enter the contest as the more formidable program. After a 29 point 2022, junior midfielder Morgan McCarthy scored three times last saturday, along with five DC’s, to contribute in the win. Attackers Haley Cummins and Taylor Ryan are also a large part of the team’s offense,… Read More

BSB | Diamond Ducks start season in walk off fashion

By Kent Williams

Opening day for the Oregon Ducks baseball program(1-0) was an exciting start for the 2023 campaign, winning a 3-2 nail biter over the Xavier Musketeers with a walk off sacrifice fly by transfer outfielder Owen Diodati. He also happened to hit a walk off against Xavier last season in the first game of the season while a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, so he is no doubt a heel in that Musketeers dugout. Scoring the winning run was another newcomer in Rikuu Nishida, who had laced a single to start off the inning and got to third by way of consecutive walks.

While many preseason pundits were more excited about this teams offense, it was the pitching staff that got the Ducks in a position to win when the lineup struggled during the middle innings. Starting the game was righty Logan Mercado, who pitched 4 innings with only 1 earned run while striking out a career high of 7 and walking 2. Following that up was another righty in…

Ducks Baseball Arrives with Series vs. Xavier and New-Look Rotation

By Charles Martindale Spring is coming in Eugene, and while the weather still needs some time to catch on, Oregon returning to action at PK Park is another good way to tell. This weekend, the 20th ranked Ducks host the Xavier Musketeers, looking to build forward after a solid 2022 season. Oregon has yet to finish below .500 in the 2020’s, a solid achievement in a historically competitive Pac-12, and the outlook this season remains the same. The Ducks are a strong and proud program with plenty to be happy about, but whether they break into a tier higher this year remains to be seen. Oregon lost Josh Kasevich to the draft, but keeps the bare bones of their core from last year. The Ducks also welcome international additions Sabin Ceballos from Puerto Rico and Rikuu Nishida from Japan, who have already been tested in key roles through the Duck’s 20 intersquad games. Nishida’s speed and bat to ball skills make him a candidate to lead off throughout the year, and… Read More
