Oregon (27-29, 10-19 Pac-12) fell just short in their comeback bid against top-ranked UCLA (47-8, 23-5 Pac-12) Friday night at PK Park by a score of 6-5. Ducks starter Brett Walker was touched up to the tune of six runs in 2.2 innings, which put Oregon behind the eight-ball for the rest of the night. From there, Cole Stringer took the reigns and pitched 6.1 scoreless frames to keep the Ducks in the ballgame.

The third inning proved to be the difference for UCLA, where they scored all six of their runs on a variety of hits and walks. Oregon bounced back with back-to-back two-run innings to cut the deficit to two, which snapped Bruins starting pitcher Jack Ralston's 27-inning scoreless streak, and the game held steady for much of the middle innings from there. In the eighth, four walks by UCLA's Kyle Mora and Holden Powell plated another run for the Ducks and brought them within one, 6-5. Oregon (27-28, 10-18 Pac-12) keeps it close with UCLA (46-8, 22-5 Pac-12) but ultimately fall late to the number one team in the country 4-2 Thursday night. Ducks pitcher Robert Ahlstrom got the start and went 7.1 innings and set a career high in strikeouts with 9. Ahlstrom was taken out in favor of junior pitcher Ryne Nelson, who didn’t have his best night, entering the 2-2 stalemate in the eighth inning only to allow a home run on his first pitch which UCLA first basemen hammered over the left field wall which gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead. Toglia’s home run was enough for the Bruins to see out the win and give undefeated pitcher Ryan Garcia his ninth win of the season; nonetheless, his impressive 1.30 ERA will go up just a few points to 1.42 as the Ducks put up two earned runs on the right-handed pitcher. There was a silver lining for the Ducks even in a loss as Oregon third baseman Spencer Steer became the all time (129) and single season (57) Oregon baseball RBI record holder…
