NBA Mid-Season Award Races

Written by Yaniv Horenstein, Leo Schulhof, and Tal Cohen

Most Valuable Player

Honorable Mentions: Luka Doncic (Dallas), Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana), Jayson Tatum (Boston), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee)

Front runners:
Joel Embiid- Philadelphia 76ers

To all the NBA fans who questioned 2022-23 MVP recipient Joel Embiid’s legitimacy as the most valuable player in the league, the Philadelphia big man is currently silencing the naysayers with a statement season. Following the convoluted loss of James Harden, it wasn’t clear if his absence would affect Embiid’s performance in a negative or a positive way, but as Tyrese Maxey has risen to fill the secondary role, Embiid has found himself in a position to flourish in a way we haven’t seen before. Halfway through the season, Embiid is averaging a ridiculous 35 points, 12 rebounds and six assists per game, along with a steal and two blocks per game. This puts him…

Oregon MBB Sweeps LA Schools at Home with a 64-59 Win Over UCLA

Written by Yaniv Horenstein EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon men’s basketball closed out 2023 with a game on Saturday afternoon against the UCLA Bruins in their second Pac-12 matchup of the season. The Ducks are still without N’Faly Dante, Mookie Cook, and Nate Bittle, but are making things work with the players they’ve got. The first half remained close, with no team getting ahead by more than four points. Oregon’s offense scored in waves, looking elite at times, and sloppy during other moments. At the break, Oregon was shooting 42% from the field, but had success from deep, making four-of-ten threes. The scoring was led by Jermaine Couisnard and Brennan Rigsby, who each had eight points at the break. The Ducks half-court offense was unable to find consistent open looks, causing a few scoring droughts throughout the half. The first twenty minutes featured many blown whistles by the referees, with 20 combined fouls called on both teams. Unfortunately for Oregon, their big men found themselves… Read More

Oregon MBB Begin Conference Play with an 82-74 Victory Over USC

Written by Yaniv Horenstein Audio Story by Tal Cohen EUGENE, Ore. — The Ducks opened conference play against the USC Trojans at Matthew Knight Arena on Thursday. The Ducks are still without key players in N’Faly Dante and Mookie Cook, who do not have clear timetables to return. Luckily, Keeshawn Barthelemy, who had been out the last two games with an ankle injury, returned for the Ducks off the bench. In the first half, the Ducks played their best basketball of the whole season. Their high quality of play began with excellent defense against USC’s talented roster. In the first half, they held the Trojans to 32% shooting from the field. USC’s highest scorer of the half was DJ Rodman with seven points. They held three potential NBA draft picks in Isaiah Collier, Boogie Ellis, and Kobe Johnson to a combined seven points on 2-of-14 shooting. Oregon forced USC to commit ten first-half turnovers, while limiting themselves to only three. The Ducks stole the ball six times, doubling USC’s… Read More
