Ducks Win 1-0, In a Pitcher's Duel Against The Cal Bears
By: Cole Rothman
Tonight, Oregon Softball started off their three game home stand against UC Berkeley with a hard fought 1-0 victory. The enthusiastic crowd saw a pitcher’s duel between the Duck’s, Jordan Dail and the Bear’s, Kamalani Dung. The two aces only allowed 7 combined hits, but the Duck’s 4 hits were enough to seal a narrow victory. Jordan Dail pitched another full game and struck out 11 batters, but according to Coach Lombardi she’d be the first to tell you that she didn’t have the best game. Dail struggled with her accuracy at times, she walked 4 batters and hit UC Berkeley's Lauren Espalin twice. Oregon and #1 UCLA were gridlocked 1-1 through the first five innings of the game, but a 3-run home run by Rachel Garcia and a grand slam by Malia Quarles blew the game wide-open. The seven-run deficit proved to be too much and Oregon lost to UCLA 8-1, giving the Bruins the series win. Oregon only mustered five hits and stranded five runners in the game, but the three errors by the infield proved to be the Achilles heel for the Ducks. The Pac-12's most efficient defense accumulated six total errors in the latter two games, which is the most in a series this season for the young Ducks defense. Overall, Oregon leaves Los Angeles wrapping up a successful weekend after taking down UCLA in the first game of the series (4-3) and losing a competitive game #2 (8-3). Oregon will host California for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
