Oppenheimer: Breaking news -- Mimi Colyer is good
Volleyball is a team sport, yes. It requires six players to act as a single-celled organism, each simultaneously reacting to the ball's path and the locations of their teammates and opponents. Furthermore, it requires this computation at perhaps the fastest speed of any sport in the world.
But when two teams are evenly matched, the superstars stand out. It often comes down to which team has the best player on the floor.
In No. 11 Oregon’s five-set Sunday matinee win over No. 24 Washington, that player was Mimi Colyer.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise for anyone who has followed Oregon volleyball for the last few years. Colyer has been Oregon’s main kill-getter since Brooke Nuneviller passed her the torch in 2022. On Sunday, the junior outside hitter played one of the best games of her career, slamming home 25 kills and diving for 13 digs — both season highs.
Through her two and a half years as a Duck, she…

The No. 11 Oregon Ducks defeated the No. 24 Washington Huskies on Sunday in a close match with a 3-2 win in five sets. It was back and forth in each set — each one won by single digits.
The Ducks started the first set slow. In Set 1, the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but service errors by Washington brought Oregon back into it. Onye Ofoegbu and Michelle Ohwobete’s blocks gave the Ducks a 25-19 Set 1 victory.
With the Ducks leading the match 1-0, they started Set 2 on a better note but the Huskies bounced back. Many of the Huskies’ points were off of errors by the Ducks. Mimi Colyer and Ohwobete had back-to-back kills to cut the lead to two towards the end of the set. Kierstyn Barton would ultimately give Washington the 25-22 Set 2 win with kills and block assists.
Heading into the third set, it was all tied up at 1-1. The Huskies easily won Set 3 25-19, thanks to kills by Madi Endsley and Barton. With…

It was one of the biggest games at Autzen Stadium in recent memory. College Football Playoff seeding was on the line. A legacy Dillon Gabriel game was at stake.
No. 3 Oregon football (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) had everything to play for -- and it stepped up under the brightest of lights in a 32-31 victory.
"It’s never about the team that wants it the most. It’s never about the team that just has great emotion. It’s about the team that executes," Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said. "I’m really proud of our guys, but I’m also really excited to figure out what we can go attack and improve. Because the team we are today, October 12, is not going to be the same team we are in December."
The first drive of the game set the tone for what the evening would look like -- chaotic. Many Ducks fans in attendance believed that Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard threw an interception to begin the matchup. Instead, the play didn't even go to review and No. 2 Ohio State (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten)…

Oregon Soccer (5-8-1, 1-5-1 Big Ten) took on the No. 5 ranked Michigan State (9-0-5, 4-0-3 Big Ten) for its penultimate home match of the season. The Ducks met and even exceeded the Spartans’ intensity and were able to keep Michigan State scoreless for the first time this season in a 0-0 draw.
It was a brisk evening at Papé Field but the Spartans came out of the gates hot. Michigan State's Sofia Beerworth got a shot off from inside the 18-yard box in the first minute. The ball just barely skied over the crossbar. After that Oregon cleaned up its defense and even held control of the ball for most of the first 10 minutes.
In the 12th minute, Oregon had its best scoring opportunity. Lauren Kenny attempted a shot off of a crosser from Hailey McWhirter. However, it sailed mere inches to the right of the goalpost. Oregon's intensity never fizzled out.
“I loved the fight, I loved the spirit, I loved the ability to really…

The Ducks never go quietly into the night, it’s in their DNA. Wednesday night at Matthew Knight Arena proved just that. After pulling away in set one for a 25-18 point victory, the No. 11 Ducks struggled to put the No. 16 Trojans away in the second set. The score was neck and neck with the largest lead on either side reaching two points — until kills from both Ally Batenhorst and Adonia Faumuina, combined with an attacking error from Oregon middle blocker Colby Neal, put USC ahead 22-19.
They were just three points away from tying the match at one set apiece. Oregon head coach Matt Ulmer called a timeout to gather his team, one that would prove to snap his players into action.
Out of the timeout, USC’s Jadyn Livings committed a service error that brought a little bit of life to Matthew Knight Arena. On the next point, a long rally ended in an attacking error from USC’s Faumuina to cut the score to 22-21 and force a Trojans’…

No. 11 Oregon volleyball moves to 12-2 overall after a dominant three-set shutout against the No. 16 USC Trojans. Last week the Ducks were shut out (0-3) at Penn State for their first conference loss of the season.
“It was really important for us to bounce back after Penn State,” head coach Matt Ulmer said. And bounce back they did.
Set 1 was neck and neck throughout until the Ducks pulled away at the 18-18 mark. Outside hitter Mimi Colyer racked up three kills to lead the charge, accompanied by errors made by the Trojans to go on a seven straight point tirade to win the set 25-18.
Set 2 was another stalemate. The Trojans led by as much as three, thanks to dominant kills at the net from USC’s Ally Batenhorst. The outside hitter notched five kills in the second set, accompanied by four from fellow outside hitter Jadyn Livings.
But that performance couldn’t fend off the Ducks. With the set…
