DJ Palette's Review of new Young Fathers Album

Scroll down to find out how Young Fathers combined apocalyptic undertones with psychedelic pop in their latest album. A review by KWVA DJ, DJ Palette. Young FathersWhite Men Are Black Men Too As the 2010s roll on, I’m seeing a trend. The trend is: “genre labels are bullshit.” This is particularly true in the genre once known as Hip-hop. After all, when Yeezy and K Dot are making albums that blend nearly every form of modern music into punishing manifestos, the rest of the world can’t help but take notice. But if any group has pushed this trope to its ragged edges, it’s been Young Fathers. The self-proclaimed “psychedelic hip-hop boy band” has gobbled up every sound they spy over the last five or so years, releasing some of the most potent, and delectably odd, albums in recent memory. 2014’s DeadRead More

DJ Daniel's Review of Toro Y Moi's What For?

Last week, Toro Y Moi released his latest album, What For?. KWVA DJ, DJ Daniel from Ambience!, doles out his opinion and compares this release to Toro's past albums. Read on to see what he got out of the record. In spite of his love of all things digital, Toro Y Moi's Chaz Bundick is a rocker at heart. His latest album What For? is a return to his indie rock roots, best showcased on his June 2009 singles collection. But he's brought the tricks he's learned from dabbling in house, chillwave, pop, and funk to the table. The result is a modest record, not his best (that's Causers of This), but with a subtle greatness and a light touch anyone familiar with Toro Y Moi is used to. These songs aren't very tight; they meander and sound just great in the background. But they're hooky as hell. Even… Read More

KWVA Goes to Burgerama

Burgerama is very intriguing. Spawned by the most explosive record label in the last few years, it creates an atmosphere of busy confusion, body heat and loud music. It’s very crowded, frequented mostly by teenagers. Burgerama is like taking every group of drunk high schoolers at various parks on a Friday night in July and putting them in a fenced in parking lot in 90 degree weather, with access only to shitty burgers and $3 water bottles. But against all odds, it works. Even more importantly, upon closer inspection, this is a diverse group of supportive young minds with an ear for current and up and coming art in their community. The whole operation works because the people who care about this music were there. It wasn’t as much about being wacky, dressing weird, and taking hallucinogens as other festivals are, it was for the music and also it was only 90 bucks. The event is produced by Burger… Read More
