DJ Splanky and DJ Catwoman's Review of STRFKR's Eugene Concert!

It may have been a few weeks ago, but the memory is fresh in our minds - STRFKR's most recent trip to Eugene, performing at WOW Hall with Com Truise and Fake Drugs. DJ Splanky and DJ Catwoman are here with the full report. People were tripping up and tripping out at the STRFKR concert on February 17th at the WOW Hall. There is no doubt in our minds that this was the best concert of the month. STRFKR had two openers, Fake Drugs and Com Truise. Fake Drugs was honestly not too much to write home about. This band only played a couple unmemorable songs and dipped out. They had some good beats, but their stage presence was all but nonexistent, and the crowd was moving like a pile of rocks. Fake Drugs is a synth-pop duo consisting of Matt Fuchs and Keil Cocoran. The duo have been close pals of STRFKR since the band took them under their wing in the Portland indie/… Read More

The Best Pop Songs On Classic Rock Radio, Pt. 1

By Daniel Bromfield DJ Daniel of Deep Ambient Hour with Daniel, Wednesdays 3-4 pm, Winter 2016

I was raised on classic rock and classic rock radio. But anyone who knows me well knows I have a lot of issues with the very rock ideal I was raised on.

Rock is conservative, macho, and generally hostile to anyone who isn’t a white, straight male despite having been indisputably invented by African Americans, many queer and female. It holds up a standard of authenticity that ultimately praises fakeness as long as your fake-out is rootsy and manly enough. And, frankly, most classic rock sucks aside from a few established institutions (the Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Stones, Zeppelin, Prince, Michael Jackson, the CSNY camp, etc.), most…

Ethiapath's Interview with CVSKET Records!

KWVA DJ Ethiapath of the show Trapped (Saturdays, 6-8 am, Winter 2016) had the pleasure of interviewing SVMBORGHINI and RIVERS of CVSKET Records in the studio the other day! Check out a bit more about the local hip hop crew below: Imagine you're walking through a graveyard on a foggy winter night in Eugene, Oregon. You see something out of the corner of your eye. When you look, nothing's there. What could it be? That eerie feeling best describes what CVSKET Records sounds like. Heavy 808 basses and haunting melodies at their disposal. CVSKET Records is an up and coming underground hip-hop super group based out of Eugene, Oregon. Having just played their first show at the WOW Hall, I had to get them in the KWVA studio for an interview. Ethiapath: Alright, so CVSKET, how did you guys get started in the underground rap game?… Read More

Matisse's Valentine's Day Playlist & Art

V-day may be over and done, but our KWVA Volunteers can't stop sharing the love! Check out Matisse Coxen's lovely playlist.  Valentine’s Day is totally overrated right? At least that’s what I always tell myself, but it just gets to me every year. All the pink and red hearts and the chocolate—how can you hate it? The whole idea is sweet, it's about appreciation for any and everyone. This playlist is perfect for Valentine’s Day whether you're just hanging out with friends, relaxing alone, or with someone special. It’s short n’ sweet and full of some of my favorites. Happy Valentine’s Day to you all! - Matisse Coxen, KWVA Volunteer Listen to the playlist here! Artwork by Matisse Coxen
