heRobust Interview

By: Sean Thomson (DJ Swanky) on September 8th, 2016 In the past few years Atlanta bred producer heRobust has quickly transformed from bedroom beat maker to selling out shows nationwide. With an arsenal of forward-thinking tracks and genre defying DJ skills, it’s no wonder he’s garnered support from industry legends such as Diplo, Bassnectar and DJ Shadow. His most recent EP I’m Aloud was released on Mad Decent and was driven by popular bangers such as “Skurt Reynolds” and “Dirty Work.” I had a chance to catch up with heRobust before his show at Mad Decent Block Party in Eugene, and we talked about his early influence, creative process and what lies ahead. Sean: Tell us a little bit about more about where you’re from and how you got started? HeRobust: I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia; that’s where a lot of hip-hop comes from especially the dirty south sound that is kind of taking over the radio right now. I never wanted to rap myself;… Read More

The Funk That You Deserve

ALBUM REVIEW: FLAMINGOSIS - BRIGHT MOMENTS

When Flamingosis (pronounced flamingo-sis) arrived on the scene with his first major release KahunaStyle, his unique blend of hip-hop sampling techniques and old-school funk sensibilities went largely unnoticed, but I knew the day would come when he would finally get the attention he deserved. That time is now. Bright Moments, his third official and newest release, is nothing short of funkadelic. Flamingosis' sampling techniques take the leading role here, propelling jamtastic beats and head-bobbing rhythms into an IV connected directly to the heart of the listener. Featuring the help of artists and producers like The Kount and Birocratic (who have also been attracting attention), Aaron Sanchez has found the perfect balance between soulful RnB and head-bobbing disco. Songs like "What Went Wrong" hook the listener with a melting melody of horns, and features a great dialogue sample in the middle that not…

Pickathon Music Festival Pre-Coverage

Written By: Jonathan Marti / Dj Implicit “And that ONE TIME, AT PICKATHON!!!” -- Why Pickathon exceeds all expectations as a music festival. There are numerous reasons why a festival experience might not turn out what you wanted and hoped for it to be. The non-local and domestic beer was insanely overpriced, and that goes for the food. You are forced to make life or death choices such as choosing to see one of your favorite artists, but not the other. You spend your time dehydrated in the scorching sun, because you can’t find any water source. And not to mention the piles upon piles of non-recyclable junk covering where the people once were, weighing on your conscious as you realize the cost of enjoying the magical experience of the concert—is filling up our landfills—all the while you pay too much for a sub-par foreign beer. Pickathon manages to avoid all of these usual downsides to a music festival, and manages to exceed all expectations. Pickathon takes place in a… Read More

NOISIA - The Three Kings of DnB

This week, we've got KWVA DJ abstract of The Darkest Side of The Moon (Saturdays, 8-10 pm, Spring 2016) throwing down all you need to know about DnB masters, Noisia. Few electronic groups can claim to be the centerpiece of their genre, yet Noisia unequivocally has come to define the face of modern drum and bass since their formation in 2002. The Dutch trio of Martijn van Sonderen, Nik Roos, and Thijs de Vlieger has played a critical role in the evolution and popularization of drum and bass, with practically every DnB producer citing them as one of the main inspirations. Noisia has amassed a diverse body of work, from numerous DnB releases to remixes of mainstream artists (Katy Perry and Tinie Tempah), movie and video game soundtracks, and orchestral performances. In addition to releasing new music and playing weekly DJ sets worldwide (perks of… Read More
