STORY: Oregon Football Survives Home Scare to Defeat Cal 17-7

It wasn’t an ideal Pac-12 home opener for the Ducks, but took home a 17-7 victory behind a 17-0 second half. The Ducks started the game plunging down the field with CJ Verdell and Travis Dye, but that drive was abrupted by Justin Herbert’s first INT of the season. Cal stormed down the field behind two big throws from QB Devon Modster, including a 22 yard Pass TD to RB Christopher Brown. Oregon’s struggles continued in the first half, as Travis Dye fumbled the ball twice to squander major scoring opportunities. Dye saw extra time as Verdell went down with a right leg injury. Down 7-0 at halftime, the Ducks came out of the gates better in the second half, finding its first points of the day behind a 28 yard Camden Lewis FG. Later in the 3rd quarter, Justin Herbert connected with Jacob Breeland for a big play to put Oregon on the 2 yard line. Cyrus Habibi-Likio punched it in to put the Ducks up 10-7 with 1:38 left in the 3rd quarter. Oregon’s dominant defensive play continued to not let Cal have anything, and Oregon laid a dagger with 7:14 left to play in the game with a 1 yard TD throw to Jaylon Redd. Oregon’s defense gave up just 250 total yards, 66 rush yards, and one trip to the redzone. Isaac Slade-Matautia led the way for Oregon’s defense with 7 total tackles. Meanwhile for the offense, Justin Herbert was 20-33 with 214 yards, 1 TD. 1 INT. Travis Dye carried it 15 times for 81 yards. Jacob Breeland led the receivers with 5 carries for 87 yards. Oregon will be back in action on Friday night at home against Colorado, kickoff at 7:00 pm.
