T&F: Day One of Prefontaine Classic Kicks Off in Historic Fashion

Day one of the Prefontaine Classic kicked off in historical fashion Friday at Historic Hayward Field. The first event of the evening, the men’s javelin, provided early fireworks for the 7,500 in attendance. The Germans swept the event going 1-2-3 but not before each of them set the meet and stadium record. First, Andreas Hofmann set the record with a throw of 282.2 feet. This was short lived, fellow countryman Johannes Vetter responded with a record throw of 289.11 feet. Thomas Rohler got the last laugh and victory with a throw of 294.10 feet. The second field event was won by Sam Kendricks of the United States with a vault of 19-3/4 feet. Kendricks defeated the defending champion Renaud Lavillenie of France. The first event of the night on the track was the women’s 800 meter which was won by Natoya Goule of Jamica. The second and final track event for the women of the night was the women’s 1500 meters. The winner of the 1500 meters was won by Dani Jones of the United States who ran a personal best time of 4:07.74. The first track event of the evening for the men was the 800 meter race. The 800 meter was won by Emmanuel Korir of Kenya who ran a season best time of 1:45.16. To finish the first day of the Prefontaine Classic was the stacked men’s 2-mile race.
