STORY: Oregon Softball Welcomes the Return of Fans in the Stands with Win Against Portland State

By Jonah Bruneau

For the first time in two years, Jane Sanders Stadium played host to a full capacity crowd of roughly 2,000 spectators for the Oregon Ducks' Softball home opener. The Ducks did not disappoint as they took control of the game early after two three-run innings in the first and second innings. When all was said and done, Oregon shutout the Portland State Vikings by the final score of 7-0 in seven innings. Under blue skies and temperatures in the sixties, the atmosphere inside "The Jane" was evidently back to normal.

Fifth year Senior Jordan Dail got the start in this one and did not let it go to waste as she got the win, putting up five scoreless innings along with striking out two and giving up just three hits. Junior Makenna Kliethermes then took over the circle in the sixth and pitched two shutout innings herself while giving up only one hit and sitting down two as well. As for the offense, Junior Vallery Wong opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run blast deep into the center field bleachers known as "The Bob". Fellow Junior Ariel Carlson then backed that up with a solo home run of her own. From there, the Ducks held control of the game the rest of the way. Some other key notables include Senior Allee Bunker, who continued to stay red hot at the plate going 1-2 with a walk, RBI, and her seventh stolen base of the season. Sophomore Hanna Delgado also tacked on two RBI's herself, and kept her batting average above a very impressive .400.

The Ducks will remain in Eugene for their next two games as they will host a Saturday doubleheader inside Jane Sanders Stadium against the North Dakota State Bison. First pitch for game one is set for 10:00 AM PT, followed by game two at 1:30 PM PT. Be sure to tune into the Oregon Live Stream, or listen live on KWVA 88.1 FM.
