Oregon softball (25-2, 1-0 Big Ten) flew north and run-ruled the Washington Huskies (20-8, 0-1 Big Ten) 9-0 in the first of a three-game series to open Big Ten conference play.

Sophomore third-baseman Katie Flannery picked up her first career multi-homer game with two long balls and racked up five RBI in the win.

“I was just trying to see ball hit ball hard,” Katie Flannery said. “Our coaches do a lot of work with our scouts and our practice, so just trying to see what I can hit hard and just do that.”

Flannery went 2-for-3 at the plate with two home runs to go along with her five RBI. She took both of Washington’s pitchers yard, a two-run bomb off Husky starter Sophia Ramuno in the third, and another two-run homer off reliever Rylee Rehbein in the fifth.

“I felt like after the Mary Nutter she started to get hot,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said. “From there [she] has been staying hot so I thought she did a really great job today.”

Flannery sported a 1.130 OPS behind eight extra-base hits coming into this game. This was her seventh multi-hit performance of the season and part of it came against one of Washington’s top starters, Ramuno, who came into Friday's contest boosting a 1.84 ERA across 49.1 IP.

“The biggest thing for us was just to be on time and to not swing out of the zone,” Lombardi said of their approach against Ramuno. “Really trying to stick with pitches in the zone.”

The Ducks have struggled with the injury bug early this season. Four of Oregon’s constant rotation pieces in the lineup and field (Rylee McCoy, Emma Cox, Ayanna Shaw and Remington Hewitt) have all missed some time with an injury. Flannery’s hot bat has filled the void as she continues to move up in the lineup.

“Obviously I’ve been pretty hot recently,” Flannery said. “It’s good that I can move my way up [the lineup] and produce for the team.”

Despite the adversity through injury this squad has faced, they’re built for it.

“People are in-and-out of the lineup,” Flannery said. “All cylinders were working for us today, Lyndsey [Grein] was amazing and our hitting was great and our defense had her back, seeing all of that especially at an away game is awesome.”

Flannery’s current 29 RBI are the most on the team. She also sits tied (with Dez Patmon) for third on the team in total home runs with six. Her current .770 slugging percentage is the second best on the team behind McCoy’s whopping 1.107.

Across 39 appearances last year, Flannery hit .253 with four home runs and 11 RBI. Her sophomore campaign is off to as hot of a start as she could ask for, she will continue to play a pivotal role in the top half of this Oregon lineup.

The win gave the Ducks their first Big Ten win since joining the conference and keeps them atop the Big Ten in overall record on the season.

They face the Huskies on both Saturday and Sunday before wrapping up their trip to Seattle with a one-game stand with Seattle University on Monday.
