Oregon Softball Bounces Back with Victory Over Cal in Game Two

Written by Jonah Bruneau

The atmosphere inside Jane Sanders Stadium was electric and boisterous for Game Two between the Oregon Ducks and the California Golden Bears of Berkeley. The Ducks were looking to bounce back from a disappointing 11-2 loss on Friday evening, in which they were able to do so as Oregon was able to hold on and take the victory by the final score of 8-6. Four of Oregon's eight runs came on wild pitches, while Cal starter and only pitcher of the game Haylei Archer threw a total of seven wild pitches. Archer went the distance for Cal, tallying an astonishing 146 pitches thrown in the game.

On the mound and getting the start for Oregon was Freshman Stevie Hansen, who has really become the star in the Ducks' pitching staff this season. Hansen pitched the first four innings while giving up three earned runs, all of which were solo home runs. Fifth year Senior Jordan Dail then took over the circle for the Ducks in the fifth, but this would not be the last that this game saw of Stevie Hansen in the circle herself. Dail struggled in the 6th inning as she hit the first two batters due up, and then walked the next batter which loaded the bases with nobody out. She was then taken out of the circle and replaced by Junior Makenna Kliethermes, who had three runs score while she was in the game. Those runs were credited to Dail. Stevie Hansen was then called upon to reenter the game in the circle and record the final the five outs of the ballgame in which she did so without giving up a run. Her combined stat line was 5.2 innings pitched, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, while recording six strikeouts.

As for the offense, Junior Ariel Carlson led the way going 2-2 with two RBI's and two walks, reaching base in all four of her plate appearances. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Sophomore Hanna Delgado had a bit of a scare as she was hit by a pitch seemingly in the rib section, bringing her down to her knees in pain. After a few short minutes of being attended to by the coaching and training staff, Delgado was able to jog to first base and stay in the game, apparently avoiding what could have been a costly injury for this Ducks team.

The rubber match of this three-game series is set to begin on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM PT back inside Jane Sanders Stadium.
