The No. 12 Oregon Ducks (23-2) closed out day three of the Jane Sanders Classic against the Abilene Christian Wildcats (4-20), taking care of business 3-1 for their second win of the day.

“This is a special group,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said. “They’ve got a plan, and they’ve got a journey, and they’re working hard to execute.”

Oregon starting pitcher Lyndsey Grein (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) began the game with a quick top of the first inning. Taylor Bachmeyer hit a fly ball into the mitt of center fielder Kedre Luschar for the first out of the game before Grein recorded her first strikeout looking and forced a grounder, making it a quick three and out.

Against Abilene Christian starting pitcher Lina Russo (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 3 BB), Oregon went down one-two-three in the bottom of the first.

Grein continued her dominance in the top of the second inning with three quick outs.

“We’re so dialed into what we’re doing, we’re not paying attention to outside noise,” Grein said.

Katie Flannery struck out swinging for Russo’s first strikeout of the day to begin the bottom of the second inning before Stefini Ma’ake also went down swinging to give Russo her second of the day.

Miranda Lista started the top of the third inning for the Wildcats, striking out for Grein’s third of the day, which she quickly followed up with her fourth, striking out Emalee Romero.

The bottom of the third inning started with Kaylynn Jones at the plate for the Ducks. She reached first base on an infield hit and instantly stole second and third on the next two pitches. On the third pitch, Braiesey Rosa hit a fly ball into right field to bring home Jones on the sacrifice fly, putting the Ducks up 1-0.

Leading off the top of the fourth inning for Abilene Christian, Julianna Martinez was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Valerie Ornelas grounded back to Grein, who misplayed the ball, putting runners on the corners for the Wildcats. Ari Maxwell followed with a pop-up that was caught by Paige Sinicki, giving the Ducks a break.

The top of the fifth inning brought the first hit of the game for Abilene Christian, with Romero reaching first on a line drive. Back at the top of the order, Bachmeyer hit a liner directly into the glove of Grein, ending the inning for the Ducks with a runner left on base.

Braiesey Rosa continued her dominant weekend with a solo home run, putting the Ducks up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. But with bases loaded and two outs, Katie Flannery hit a fly ball to center field that was caught for the third out of the inning. The Ducks had missed an opportunity to open up the lead even further.

Elise Sokolsky (2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) took over for Lyndsey Grein in the top of the sixth, working a routine three-and-out.

Kedre Luschar led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt before reaching second. After Luschar stole third, Jones bunted, making it to first base safely and allowing Kedre Luschar to score another run for the Ducks, putting them up 3-0. She then stole second on Rosa’s first pitch at the plate but was thrown out trying to swipe third to end the inning.

Abilene Christian needed three runs to extend the game past the top of the seventh inning but couldn’t pull it off. Sokolsky got the job done, striking out the first two batters. Lista hit a ball deep into left field and kept the game alive with a double to put herself into scoring position. Romero then hit a deep fly ball into center field and, on what would normally be a routine flyout, the Luschar sisters, Kai and Kedre, bumped into each other, causing the ball to hit the ground and allowing Miranda Lista to score a run and Romero to reach third base. Bachmeyer followed with a line drive out into left field, but Kai Luschar made a diving catch to end the game.

“We have a lot more to accomplish this season,” Grein said. “We’re going to celebrate the wins, but knowing tomorrow we have to wake up and there’s more to do.”

After a glimmer of hope in the top of the seventh for Abilene Christian, Oregon was able to hold on to the win.

Oregon will close out the Jane Sanders Classic with a rematch against Abilene Christian Monday morning at 10:30 a.m.
