The No. 9 Oregon Ducks baseball team (17-4, 5-1 Big Ten) fell short on Sunday to the Minnesota Gophers (8-10, 2-4 Big Ten) in the last game of the series with a final score of 9-1.
After a five-hour rain delay and eight innings, the Ducks were only able to tack one onto the board after a Minnesota error.
Oregon stepped up to the plate straight off back-to-back wins against Minnesota earlier in the weekend to clinch the series, as well as a five-game winning streak in Big Ten play.
Despite the lack of offensive momentum, senior pitcher Jaxon Jordan and junior pitcher Ian Umlandt played a strong defensive game for the Ducks.
“Those guys threw really well,” head coach Mark Wasikowski said. “Those two pitchers, it was really good. They gave us a chance, threw a couple of zeros out there for us and I thought they were outstanding.”
Jordan pitched for two innings with five kills, while Umlandt pitched for 2 ⅓ innings and racked up three kills.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the seventh that the Ducks were able to put up a score. Junior Chase Meggers reached on a fielding error, advancing junior Dominic Hellman to second and then leading freshman Burke-Lee Mabeus home.
“There's some really positive takeaways from this series,” Wasikowski said.
The Ducks look ahead to host their second Big Ten series against Rutgers University starting on Friday with the first pitch set for 5:05 p.m.
