Huskies third-inning explosion blows the Ducks out of the water

In the 100th all-time meeting in the storied rivalry between #9 Washington and #24 Oregon, the Huskies broke away in the top of the third inning with six runs. The third inning started with Sydney Stewart launching a home run to left field. With Morgan Scott in the circle and two outs down, the scoring onslaught began as Avery Hobson walked followed by three consecutive Huskies connecting on base hits with two runners home to give the Huskies a three-run lead. Washington catcher Olivia Johnson decided to join the party and blasted a ball to left field over the wall for a three-run home run and extended Washington's lead to 6-0.

Coach Lombardi said she thought Scott had a favorable matchup after the two-out walk and "wanted to stick with her." Lombardi noted Scott only allowed one base hit, giving the coach a positive feeling with one out to go in the inning. Scott ended her night allowing six hits and six runs in 80 pitches.

Trying to overcome this deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning, Kai Luschar stepped up to the plate with bases loaded, a full count, and the Ducks still down 6-0. Luschar watched a ball zip just wide of the box to force a walk and let Katie Flannery score. The Huskies tried to switch things up on the Ducks by pulling pitcher Ruby Meylan for Sidne Peters, but regardless Hannah Delgado still cracked a single to right field sending two runners home. This cut Washington's lead in half and gave Oregon life in a 6-3 ball game.

Ultimately, the Huskies' scoring eruption was too much to overcome for Oregon as they lost 8-3. Coach Lombardi said her team had the opportunity to "clutch up at the plate," and they "simply didn't." Oregon will look to bounce back from a disappointing performance with two more games to go in the series against Washington.
