The No. 25 Oregon Ducks (2-1) pulled off the 40-21 upset over the No. 12 BYU Cougars (2-1) in front of a roaring Autzen Stadium.
The Cougar faithful traveled well, with large patches of Autzen covered by blue shirts. But the Ducks worked quickly to show who’s house it really was. BYU was driving on the first possession of the game, but a head-scratching decision to go for it on 4th down and long led to a turnover on downs.
With the defensive momentum behind them, the Ducks started to roll and wouldn’t look back. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix ran the offense to perfection from the first snap. By the end of the first half, Nix had rushed into the end zone twice and threw for one more to give Oregon a dominant 24-7 halftime lead.
Saturday was another great game for tight end Terrance Ferguson. The sophomore pass catcher hauled in two touchdown catches in Autzen for the second week in a row. Nix clearly has started to find his reliable targets, and Ferguson is at the top of the list.
On the defensive side, Oregon’s front seven turned on the clamps and the secondary looked solid. Defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus led the way for the Ducks with seven tackles and one and a half tackles for loss.
“We knew it was going to take our best,” said Head Coach Dan Lanning. “Ultimately, if you can protect yourself against shots against that team, and you can stop the run, you’re going to have the chance to be successful so those were our two goals going in.”
BYU quarterback Jaren Hall led his offense to two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late for the Cougars.
Next week sends Lanning and the Ducks up to Pullman, WA for a tough start to Pac-12 play against Washington State.
