DJ name and show:
DJ Spinitch of Vernacular Veggies
Show time: Fridays, 2-4 am, Fall 2015
Hometown: Portland, OR
Show description:
Mostly Hip Hop — one of my first true loves that never disappoints me and stays forever expanding. Gotta show love to the roots though, so you’ll hear funk, jazz, soul/neo-soul, and maybe other sporadic stuff from time to time — a sub-goal of mine is to play at least three cuts on wax each show — my record collection will be spun.
What artists do you commonly play on the show?
J Dilla, Nas, Rakim, Madlib, The Roots, J-Live, D.I.T.C., Wu-Tang Clan, Common, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, and hundreds more.
Not commonly played but shall receive airtime: Counting Crows, Citizen Cope, Bob Marley, The Impressions, alladat good stuff.
How long have you been a DJ?
My whole life... =) Nah, on the really real just since the top of October. I’m brand new so I’m just trying to improve every session and learn as much as possible.
What made you want to be a DJ?
Several people I know do this either at UO or other schools and all of ‘em were having a blast so I figured why not? Put in an app, 4 months later Ryder hits me back and the rest is history (huge S/O to the programming directors Ryder and Oliver, you guys are the bees knees). I love spreading things I love, but sometimes I feel boxed in without an outlet to do so. KWVA made it possible; I’m blessed to be involved. I wanna show love to the fact that vinyl records incorporate four of the senses into music — listening, smell, feel, and visuals. And IMO it’s in good taste, so I guess that’s five ;)
What makes your show unique?
I aim to keep it sporadic with everlasting freshness. I (almost) never wanna play the same cut on two different shows. I wanna have all-instrumental sets, all vinyl sets, all female emcees sets, all Dilla Joints sets, all random-music-that-I-bet-you-didn’t-know-I-like sets, etc. I will have my homies come through, I will have discussions on random Hip Hop topics (like Top 5’s and Biggie vs. 2Pac-esque debates) and share my opinions, occasionally I will talk about random stuff like basketball, movies, books, philosophies, etc.
If you could play only one album on the radio for the rest of your DJ career, what would it be and why?
I guess, predictably, Illmatic by Nas, because it quintessentially encompasses all I love about Hip Hop. He revolutionized Hip Hop forever with that album. First of all, there’s something to be said about a full-length, debut project that runs through flawlessly in under 40 minutes. It’s airtight and there are no blips; the whole thing is certified cohesive dopeness. The producers he assembled (Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor, L.E.S. and Q-Tip), the vivid storytelling, the portrayal of NY as the mecca and birthplace of Hip Hop, the lyricism, the flows, the rhyme schemes, the FEELS man... He was my age (around 18-20 depending on the particular track) when he made that.
How did you come up with your DJ name and/or show name?
One day, when I was maniacally eating spinach straight out of the bag like it was popcorn — a daily procedure — it just all came to fruition.
Shout out to my Aunt Cathie (aka AC The Homie) for gifting me with the nickname Spin (or Spin Doctor/Spin Doc) when I was a little tike. So I started with that and then thought... I’m gonna be a DJ and my favorite DJ trick is the 360 scratch — "Spin", meaning 360, and “itch”, meaning scratch.

Dream guest to have on your show?
DJ Premier. Imagining all the to-die-for stories he could pull out about the plethora of artists he has worked with is incomprehensible. I would have him absolutely CUT up the turntables too... Let him choose half the cuts, me choose the other half... It could be problematic though because I don’t know if I could make it all the way through without melting into a puddle from the sheer presence of the legend.
Any influences as a DJ?
Everyone I know that already does this, friends, family, spinach, Hip Hop, and the only truth I know: love.
One.
