Wigs. One of the most versatile costume pieces. A wig can be a defining feature of many famous artists or classic characters. As Eugene Halloween party-goers scramble for a last minute costume, it might seem as if the procrastinating party guest has struck gold walking down an aisle in Hirons or Spirit Halloween. Even one small detail can recall the image of one of the most beloved pop or classic rock icons of modern music.

A Halloween costume based on a famous artist is one of the most recognizable and stand-out costumes, and, in some cases, can be easily thrown together depending on the level of preparation for the occasion. From Britney Spears and her giant snake at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2001, to a platinum blonde wig and all black outfit emulating Phoebe Bridgers, the music world boasts a wealth of inspiration and ideas.

A source of inspiration applicable to many rock idols from the 60s and 70s is the brown or black bowl cut. Think The Beatles, The Monkees, The Rolling Stones. All with many eras to choose from. Some are very distinct, like the rainbow suits of “Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,” and some are simple, like button up and tie - something many people have in their closets or could easily thrift.

Another iconic group costume (if you’re not afraid of face paint) is Kiss. Think leather. Think fringe. Think rock 'n' roll. The hard rock band from New York is arguably one of the most recognizable groups in music history - their white and black face paint and over-the-top leather outfits that have evolved throughout the years. The more extreme this costume gets, the more fun.

For the solo act, a nostalgic pop star for much of Gen Z is Katy Perry. Perry has a long list of iconic costumes - from music videos, to stage performances, to the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show. Some of her most streamed music videos from the 2010s contain multiple elaborate outfits to replicate, including a neon green skirt and pink long sleeve top from the “Last Friday Night” music video, and a dress covered in candy complete with a long light purple wig with bangs from the “California Gurls.”

Music artists are some of the most eccentric, culturally popular, and easily recognizable figures - all factors that come together to make a great Halloween costume. The streets have seen it all, and the people are eagerly awaiting their next David Bowie with a face paint lighting bolt or Michael Jackson in a red leather suit.
