DJ Spotlight: DJ Petunia from The Boom Bat

DJ Petunia from The Boom Bat is probably one of the most interesting DJ's we have at KWVA. Why's that, you ask? Well first, take a look at that graphic. To find out the rest, keep scrolling.   DJ name: DJ Petunia Show time: Tuesdays 3-4PM, Winter 2015 Show title: The Boom Bat Hometown: Eugene, Oregon KWVA: Tell us about your show and what types of music you spin. DJ Petunia: Punk, post-punk, garage, shoegaze, emo, art rock, math rock. Mostly music I would want to play while I was driving somewhere. What artists do you commonly play on the show? Porches, Ought, The Wipers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Parquet Courts, Wire, The Feelies, Sonic Youth, and Pile. How long have you been a DJ? One and one half years. What made you want to be a DJ? My favorite radio station in the whole world is Hot 97.1 in New York. They taught me the importance of a live, interactive and unique music experience. The Internet is cool but if you let robots play music for you that’s not very “rock and roll” as Marty McFly would say. Hot 97, not only brought me untold joy but they taught me about expression, tolerance, dedication and also, that there is a Burlington Coat Factory on 118th street. Tell us your favorite moment/memory as a DJ: Once I live broadcasted the Orbital Sciences Antares rocket launch, which ended up exploding like 10 seconds after launch. It was unmanned which was great for everyone, but it was strangely exhilarating to explain to a live audience you just saw a space ship explode in real time. What makes your show unique? Well, if I indulge myself, I like to think that my show is the soundtrack to a bunch of dingoes wearing sunglasses cruising the Serengeti looking for trouble. Dingoes are rock and roll because they’re dirty, the always roll as a pack and because they’re never up to any good. Think if the Jets from West Side Story were both more punk rock and also animals. I think I have a good balance of being comfortable and also eclectic on air. But really, the best part is that anyone in the world would have a unique radio show if they did it. Does your grandpa have a radio show? What would he play? What kind of stuff would he say on air? Would he talk about Kanye West? Would he play Guided By Voices?  Any influences for your show or as a DJ? Emilio Estevez in Repo Man. Earing and all. Anything else you’d like the world to know about your show? It generally sounds better the louder you play it. Thanks, DJ Petunia! If you're interested in being the next featured DJ of the week, contact music@kwvaradio.org.
