Live Session Recap written by Everette Cogswell (read her full interview with BendreTheGiant here!)

"I had the chance to listen as BendreTheGiant filled the KWVA music station with their unique sound on March 2, 2025. I went into this session with no prior knowledge of the band or their genre, except for the fact that their guitarist, Avery Scanlon, is a jazz studies professor at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance.

Prior to their live session, I had a chance to sit down with them for 10 minutes to talk about all things BendreTheGiant, including their genre, history, and goals for the future. After our conversation, I was very eager to hear what they had to play for the station. I didn’t have an idea of what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised with what they had to offer. I especially appreciated the inspiration behind their name being an homage to André the Giant.

When they began their session, I moved into the room where the recording and mixing happened so I could hear their set a little better than being in the room with them. I think this made all the difference in my listening experience. They let me know during our conversation that they were releasing their new EP, “Wading in the Deep End,” in just a couple of days, so I was most eager to hear the songs of the new EP.

After getting to know them, it was clear that all this band aspired to be was a lighthearted, low-pressure group of people who, at the end of the day, have a passion for music; and that is exactly what they achieved. It was super inspiring to see a group of people who came together all with the same goal and achieved it in just 3 years of collaboration. They ended their session with another song off their new EP, “Homeless,” a melodic, somewhat eerie ballad that was the perfect conclusion to their set.

Afterward, I thanked them for their time and left the station as a new fan of BendreTheGiant.

If you are interested in listening to them, their new EP, “Wading in the Deep End,” is out on all streaming platforms!"

This session was hosted by KWVA Music Director Jackson Kvikstad aka DJ Fud.
