BSB: Oregon Baseball Wins Defensive Battle vs. Washington 1-0 on Deluca Walk-off

Oregon baseball came into Sunday’s matchup against Washington having lost the last two in ugly fashion against the Huskies. Sunday was a different story, as the defense stepped up to shut out the huskies for a 1-0 run. Brett Walker started on the mound for the Ducks, and gave up 5 hits in 3.1 innings but Washington couldn’t capitalize to score any runs. Ryne Nelson came in for relief, allowing just 3 hits and dealing 8 K’s in his 5.2 innings pitched. The first real drama of the game came in the 7th inning, as Washington put runners on first and second base courtesy of good hustle plays. Nelson retired the next two batters to keep the game scoreless. In the 8th inning, Nelson struck all three batters out. Nico Tellache took his spot in extra innings, where more drama ensued. With runners on first and second and one out, Tellache caught a runner stealing third but was called for a balk, sending PK Park into a frenzy. Tellache presumed to retire the next two batters, giving the offense a chance to take the game. Tanner Smith smashed a single into right field setting up the Ducks on first and third with two outs. Up came Jonny Deluca, who was set up with a full count before slugging a ball into right field to take the game. Deluca was 0-4 on the day before his big at-bat that stole the game. After the series, Oregon is now 1-2 in conference play with a series against undefeated Arizona State beginning Friday at PK Park.
