Review: Afternoons is one of those bands that is just flat out fun to listen to. With the 2014 release of their album, Say Yes, we have been blessed by the indie rock gods with a solid, consistent album that is danceable and enjoyable from the first track (“Graffiti Artist”) to the last (“We’re Just Below The Sun”). The second song of the album (“Say Yes”) reminds me of a more fun version of, well, the band Fun.! It’s bouncy and delightful, and from there, the album is nicely arranged from songs much like “Say Yes” to still-energetic-yet-moody electronica party hits. The band is comprised of members already stars in their own right, such as opera singer Claire McKeown, Irving drummer Brent Turner, keyboardist Aaron Burrows (of Sea Wolf and Irving), and Sam Johnson, that impressive multi-instrumentalist that stepped in for Aaron Burrows in Irving. The result is a passionate and dreamy blend of indie rock suitable for any car commercial and electronica that even your mom would like. One of my new favorite albums, Say Yes is a solid result from mid-afternoon recording jam sessions and deserves to be music you toss into your next morning jog playlist.
