How did you get involved with KWVA? What made you want to be a DJ?

Last school year I had a friend in Chicago who had just started DJing at her school and was loving it, so I started to wonder if there was anything like that at UO. I didn’t hear about KWVA until halfway through my freshman year, but once I did, I instantly wanted to join. I listened to community radio stations in Portland and always wondered what it would be like to DJ. Once I had my first show, I loved it and knew I had to stay.

Tell us your favorite moment/memory as a DJ:

One that comes to mind was my first show alone at the station. It was from 4-6am so I assumed there wasn’t going to be anyone listening but someone called in about halfway through my show! I was super caught off guard but also really excited that there was actually someone listening so late. The guy who called to me about what I was playing and gave me a bunch of music recommendations.
What makes your show unique?

I thinking having half of it dedicated to only female artists makes it kind of unique. When I first started I found myself playing primarily male artists and really wanted to switch it around and showcase females. Men have dominated the music industry for so long so it felt really important to me to have a space dedicated to women.

Dream guest to have on your show?

Lauryn Hill, definitely.
