Oregon Baseball Loses at home to Portland Pilots 6-4

By: Jonah Rosenberg

It was not the type of performance that Oregon Baseball Head coach Mark Wasikowski wanted when the Portland Pilots(13-13) came into town on Tuesday afternoon as the Pilots took care of business against the hometown Ducks. Isaac Ayon got the start for the ducks but only lasted 2 ⅓ innings after giving up 6 hits and 4 runs, which was enough to credit the freshman Pitcher with his first loss of the season. Oregon struggled stopping the power hitters of the Pilots allowing Sam Brown and Chad Stevens a combined 7 hits on 10 at bats and a combined 5 RBIs.

Errors were also an issue for the Ducks today. The usually reliable 3b Kenyon Yovan could not handle a ground ball, and catcher Jack Scanlon allowed a pitch past him which gave up a run. In addition to these errors, the Ducks also committed a baserunning error when Josh Kasevich did not touch second base when returning to first after a deep Jack Scanlon flyout. Mental mistakes cost the Ducks in this one.

Aaron Zavala led the way for the Ducks like he normally does hitting 4-5 on the day with an RBI. Zavala now is hitting .443 on the season and climbing. Gabe Matthews also made history today with his 48th double for the Oregon Ducks. His 48 doubles is most all time for an Oregon player in a career. Head Coach Mark Wasikowski called today’s performance the “worst” of the year and he took responsibility in the post-game conference for not preparing his team for this matchup.

Oregon will next be in action this Friday as the Oregon Ducks (16-7) play host to the rival Oregon State Beavers(21-6). KWVA will have all the coverage from the rivalry weekend ahead.
