Oregon Softball improved to 21-2 after winning their first four contests at home in the Oregon tournament. The latter two of those four games came on Sunday as Oregon faced off against the Seattle Redhawks and the Portland State Vikings.
The first game of the day opened up with a ceremonial first pitch from Dan and Molly Sanders to honor their late parents, Jane and Bob Sanders. It was a pitchers duel between Stefanie Madrigal and Brooke Yanez. Madrigal went 7.2 innings allowing just 1 earned run, and only 3 total Ducks to waddle around the bases. Madrigal was out shined by Yanez, who went 7 innings pitched, and struck out 11 batters. Samaria Diaz played the hero in extras from inside the circle. She managed to get out of a jam with two runners on and no outs in the 8th to leave Seattle scoreless in the frame.
The Ducks capitalized offensively by way of the sacrifice fly off the bat of Deijah Pangilinan. Two of the Ducks three runs were scored in that fashion including an 8th inning fly ball to right field that allowed Vallery Wong to tag up and score from third on a walkoff.
The second game lacked the dramatics of the first, but had a similar amount of heroics. Jordan Dail got the start and had a fine outing. going 4 innings and allowing 2 earned runs.
The bats were much more lively for the Ducks in the 2nd game of the day. The 1st inning was headlined with an Allee Bunker double down the left field line which scored two. Bunkers RBI ability was quickly overshadowed in the next inning when Jasmine Sievers launched a Grand Slam over the fence in left-center field to headline a 7 run 2nd inning. As if there was any doubt the game wasn’t already in hand Rachel Cid sent the fans home happy with a line drive over the left field wall that was gone in a blink of an eye.
Oregon now prepares to travel to Saint Mary’s for a Wednesday match-up before kicking off Pac-12 play at California next weekend.
