Ducks Win Home-Opener in 9th (3-2) Against Nevada Reno, First Win of the Season

It was a gorgeous Friday evening in Eugene as the Oregon Ducks faced off against the University of Nevada Reno Wolfpack in a thrilling comeback win in the ninth inning for the Ducks. Pitching drove the narrative for both teams for most of the game, but that narrative quickly changed when the Ducks scored four runs in the final two innings to tie and then win the game. Both clubs came into the evening winless, and it looked like the Wolfpack would be the first to claim a victory but an 8th inning single by Aaaron Zavala, the game would be tied at two a piece going into the ninth. From there Kenyon Yovan would come away being the hero hitting a lightning bolt to score the game winning run in walk-off fashion. Yovan would finish the evening 3-4 while hitting .625 for the season so far. The Wolfpack’s pitching was scorching to start, as Nevada starter Owen Shart pitched 6 strong innings, allowing no runs on just two hits while adding eight strikeouts for the evening. Nevada would take the lead in the 4th due to a Wyatt Tilley single with runners at the corners followed by a Brady Hormel sacrifice fly to extend their lead by two. On the mound for the Ducks was Cullen Kafka, who pitched five solid innings allowing three hits and giving up two unearned runs. However it was Andrew Mosiello who came into relief pitching three dominant innings only allowing one hit while striking out four batters, two of which were on called strike threes. Closer Kolby Somers would receive the win in the stat sheet, while Nevada Reno reliever Blane Abeyta would receive the loss.

Manager Wasikowski noted how impressed he was with pitcher Cullen Kafka who “had been hit pretty hard by a talented Minnesota team, he came out tonite and did pretty well.” Relief pitcher Andrew Mosiello also received praise from his coach with Wasikowski stating “Man he’s electric, he’s just screaming right now to be a starter for this team.” The Ducks will go against the Wolfpack again tomorrow at 1 p.m. and again on Sunday at 1p.m.
