WBB: Oregon Dominates Northeastern in Season Opener

By Justin Grossweiner

The Oregon Ducks Women’s Basketball team opened their season with a 89 to 47 win at home against Northeastern at Matthew Knight Arena coming off of their historic exhibition win against Team USA this weekend. Sabrina Ionescu had a tough shooting night but contributed to the win in a plethora of other ways as she had 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Ruthy Hebard led the way for Oregon’s scoring with a dominating performance, putting up 21 points on an incredible 10-11 shooting. Lydia Giomi chipped in with 18 points (on 8-10 shooting) with 9 rebounds off the bench in one of her best performances of her Oregon career. Minyon Moore also had a notable game with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and a team high 10 assists.

While the Ducks only shot 26% percent from three, they shot 47 percent from the field overall to go along with very stout defense to outmatch Northwestern. Northeastern shot 32.8 percent overall from the field Monday afternoon, and it was clear that they didn’t have an answer for Oregon’s height offensively and defensively early on. The top ranked Ducks look to keep their momentum going when they take on Utah State Wednesday at 6 at home.
