SB | Oregon’s Postseason Hopes Fall in 11-3 Loss to Utes

Following their 4-3 loss to Utah on Friday, May 3, Oregon Softball knew their postseason hopes were bleak; they’d have to win all five games left on their schedule or they’d finish below .500 and ineligible for a postseason bid. However, Saturday’s 9-4 win gave the Ducks optimism for a late run, which continued early into Sunday’s rubber match. Cherish Burks’ second-frame homer and Lexi Wagner’s fourth-inning RBI single put Oregon up 3-0 midway through the bout. Disaster struck during the bottom of the fourth, though, as three errors helped six runs across. One of the errors occurred when Hannah Galey, injured attempting to catch Ally Dickman’s triple to dead-center, couldn’t stand up to throw the ball in. By clearing the bases and scoring herself, the senior Dickman pushed Utah ahead 6-3. All told, the Utes scored 11 unanswered to bury the Ducks. At 22-27, Oregon has three games left next weekend against Arizona State. While celebrations are in store for Oregon’s senior class, a shot at the postseason is not.
