MBB: Hot Shooting Helps Oregon Blow By USC

The Oregon Ducks (10-6, 1-2) beat the USC Trojans(9-8, 2-2) Sunday evening home at Matthew Knight Arena by a score of 81-60. It was a strong shooting night for the Ducks who were able to tally a season high 13 made three point shots on 13 of 24 shooting from behind the arc. Overall the Ducks shot 56 percent from the field and 64% in the second half.

In the first half both teams were able to go on big runs as well as have their struggles as both teams had droughts of 3 minutes or more. The Ducks were able to jump out to a 5-0 run early in the first half and never looked back leading by as much as 15 in the first period. Throughout the first half the Ducks held the advantage from the 3pt arc as Oregon shot 6-13 compared to USC’s 2-9. However the Trojans made up for their perimeter struggles by scoring 16 points in the paint vs Oregon’s 8. For the Ducks, Louis King and Paul White added 14 points each to make up for the Oregon guards shooting a combined 3 of 11. For the Trojans, Bennie Boatwright played all 20 minutes of the first half as USC was able to ride a 7-0 run into the half to cut the Ducks lead to 36-28.

In the second half the Ducks capitalized on their hot shooting as their shooting percentage increased over the course of the second period. The Ducks shot 7 of 11 from the 3pt arc in the second half which helped Oregon to outscore the Trojans 45-32 in the final 20 minutes. Not only did the Ducks shoot well from the perimeter, but they also did a great job on the defensive end as well. USC shot less than 30% from the arc and only 42% from the field overall. The Ducks ball control was also a hot topic as they did not turn the ball over in the last 8 minutes of the game which helped Oregon secure the win down the stretch.

Louis King scored 19 points of 8-13 shooting and added 8 rebounds as well as dished out 6 assists. Paul white tied his career high for points,19, shooting 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Jonah Mathews lead the Trojans with 15 points, and Bennie Boatwright added 13 of his own including 8 rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Ducks are next in action this Thursday at the University of Arizona(13-4,4-0) at 5pm as well as next Saturday at Arizona State (11-5,2-2).
